Transportation has historically played a major role in Elwood's development. During its erly history, a steam ferry operation between Elwood and St. Joseph grew to be an area institution of the day.
Elwood was the starting point in Kansas of the famous Pony Express which operated from the spring of 1860 to the fall of 1861. Then on April 18, 1860, the first "iron horse" touched Kansas soil when track laying began on the Roseport-Palmetto Railroad.
Today thriving businesses and industries have locted here due in part to its proximity to St. Joseph and Kansas City and their major travel routes.
