The history of Sparks days back to 1870 when it was founded as a railroad point named Highland station. It is located at the corner of K-7 and 120 Highways. Re-named for John Sparks, a local pioneer and leading resident, sparks was one of the busiest shipping points in Doniphan county for grain and livestock.

Today, the town is well preserved and joins with White Cloud and troy in May and Sept. as the site of one of the largest flea markets in the nation.
