You
might recognize the sights of Burns from "Mars Attack," the Warner
Brothers movie that premiered in December 1996. The movie company filmed
segments of their movie in Burns, bringing Hollywood glitz to small-town Kansas.
The Warner Brothers company left one piece of evidence of their stay - the Burns
sign on US Highway 77 was their gift to the community.
There's eleven miles between Burns and Florence, far enough to be on their own, yet close enough for community ties. This is where the food get good! At the cafe and bakery all pies, cakes, breads, and cinnamon rolls are homemade and the mashed potatoes are real. Next door visitors may watch the work of craftsman at the Walnut Valley dulcimer Company. The owner explains the dulcimer is the "only native American instrument." They sell to customers all over the United States. Horse pits and Bar-B-Que make up a perfect outing at the Double S Salloon. It is a private supper club with a 10 day application period so call ahead for a mail in application if you're coming this way. (316) 726-5215

Down at the bottom of a very steep hill runs main street Florence and at 234 Marion St. stands the old, but historic
Harvey House Hotel. Fred Harvey opened one of his fine restaurants here in 1876 to provide elegant meals to Santa Fe passengers. Even more notable, right here in Florence, it became the first Harvey House with sleeping accommodations.
One third of the original structure has been preserved as a museum by the Florence Historical Society. Visitors may view a "Harvey Girl" mannequin dressed in uniform, place settings, and several Fred Harvey items. A 1929 caboose, the first year metal cabooses were introduced is the latest addition to the Society's collection. Admission is free, but donations welcomed. Call ahead for further information at (316) 878-4296. Tours may be arranged by appointment.
