Blue Rapids

Alcove Spring was the first Marshall County property entered on the National Register of Historic Places. The site, in a privately owned pasture, had been open to the public but was closed in the 1970s. In March 1993 the Blue Rapids Chamber of Commerce leased five acres at the site and reopened Alcove Spring. The Spring, which is never known to have dried up even during severe Kansas droughts, flows from the side of the alcove into the basin below the falls. Water from a wet-weather creek flows over a rocky outcrop and falls about 10 to 12 feet into the same pool. It is located along the Oregon trail, 6 1/2 miles north of Blue Rapids, Kansas.

The gypsum, which is mined two miles north of Blue Rapids, is among the purest in the world. The present Georgia Pacific plant was constructed in 1960 and employs nearly 100 people. Gypsum is used in wallboard, wall plaster, plaster of paris, fillers in abrasives, toothpaste, dental plaster, cement and paint. Guided tours are available.

The log cabin that dates back to 1874-76 was moved from southeast of Blue Rapids to the southeast corner of the town square (which happens to be 'round').

The oldest public library in continuous use in Kansas is in Blue Rapids. Listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings, it was built in 1875.

On October 24, 1913, Blue Rapids played host to the Chicago White Sox and New York Giants as they played an exhibition game while on World Tour. More than 3,000 fans sat on bleachers, hung on fences, and watched from Model T's when the teams came to town. The Blue Rapids diamond is one of the few surviving sites still in use to have fielded baseball legends Crawford, McGraw, Klem, Mathewson, Thorpe, and Weaver. Blue Rapids is also the smallest town in the U.S. to have hosted a National League baseball game.
