Powell Observatory houses a 30" Newtonian telescope: the largest for public viewing within our six state region. North 69 Highway to the Louisburg exit, east to Broadway, north on Broadway to 16th Street, west on 16th to Jingo Road, North on Jingo to 263rd Street, west to Lewis-Young Park entrance. Public programs 1st and 3rd Saturdays from May to October.

K-68 Highway and Old Metcalf. 1871 Port of Entry. Once a Victorian home front porch fixture. Also used as living quarters during WWII.

 

Four miles west of Louisburg (69 Hwy.) on K-68 Highway. Old fashioned cider mill with tours, is housed in a 120 year old renovated barn. Home of the famous "Last Trail (Root Beer)" Saloon. Mail order gifts from renowned country store.

10th and Main. Historic John Brown Cabin, Memorial Museum, and statue. Memorial Hall, swimming pool, playground, picnic area.

8th and Main Streets. Burial site of men killed in the 1856 Battle of Osawatomie, honoring 5 men, including Frederick Brown, son of John Brown.

8th and Marais des Cygnes River. One of two Marsh triple span bridges in town. National Register of Historic Places. Site of annual spoonbill event.

First and Carr Streets. National Register of Historic Places. Pin connected reverse Parker truss structure 219 feet long and 16.5 feet wide. No other design like it found.

First and Carr Streets. National Register of Historic Places. 1902 Queen Ann home with over 7,000 square feet, nine fireplaces, and ornamental ceilings constructed for $49,000. Under renovations by current owner, State Senator Doug Walker and family.

Sixth and Lincoln Streets. Built in 1854 used by first Mayor of Osawatomie. Currently a Tourist Information Center and home of the Osawatomie Historical Society.

Sixth and Lincoln Streets. Historic landmark of the forced march of the Pottowatomie Indians from Indiana to Kansas in 1838.

315 Sixth Street. First church in Osawatomie built in 1861 by Rev. Samuel Adair, the brother-in-law of John Brown.

628 Main Street. Open Tuesday-Sunday, 1-4. Wide range of monthly exhibits.

One mile west of 169 Highway on K-279. State's first insane asylum. "Old Main Building" on National Register of Historic Places.

Constructed in 1898 by George Washburn of Ottawa. Unique clock tower, stone arches and square brick pillars. Spanish-American War Memorial. M-F 8-4:30.


North side Park Square. Legacy of early settlers, Indians, and Civil War. Home of Miami County Genealogical Society. Open 1-4p.m. Mondays, 5-8p.m. Thursdays, and 10-4p.m. Saturdays.

905 East Wea. 1914 renovated Ursuline Sisters Academy Boarding School. Currently hosts dinner theater, civic and municipal meetings, and educational events.

701 East Miami. Home to the Sisters of Ursuline established in 1894, starting as a boarding school for Indians. Monumental cemetery, academy and farm buildings.

101 E. Peoria. Established in 1872, over 30,000 materials. Open Monday through Thursday 10-8:30p.m., Friday 10-5p.m., and Saturday 10-4p.m.

Central business district. Fountains, gazebo, play and picnic areas. Originated as an amphitheater and horse racing track, deeded to the city by Indian Chief Baptiste Peoria.

Wea and Pearl Streets. Home of one of the few remaining original "Soda Fountains."
