
Elk City Reservoir
Located five miles northwest of Independence, offers a wide variety of outdoor recreation and forms a lake featuring a shore line nearly 50 miles long. Opportunities include hunting, fishing, camping, boating, swimming, hiking and picnicking. Water and electric hook-ups are available. Open year round.
Riverside Park
This 124 acre showcase comes complete with facilities and equipment for the joy and entertainment of young and old alike. The grounds include- a carousel, miniature train, and a miniature golf course.
Ralph Mitchell Zoo
Zoo residents include sun bears, buffalo, monkeys, cougars, a swan pond, caymans, eagles, and a flock of tame peacocks who roam the grounds. One of the more famous inhabitants was Miss Able, the first monkey in space. She resided at Monkey Island until her blast off in 1960.
Neewollah
It lasts for one full week, and Independence which is normally a town of around 11,000, becomes a city of over 80,000. Neewollah offers musical stage shows, queen competition and coronation, carnival, concessions, street acts, artists alley, and top performers in the entertainment world. It is topped off by one of the biggest and grandest parades ever, a two hour kaleidoscope of music, color, pageantry and just good old fun! (Have you figured out what Neewollah stands for? It's Halloween spelled backwards!)
