Portis, Kansas

Disney's Porky Pig was brought to life through the artistry of Portis native, Melvin "Tabby" Millar. Leaving Portis, he attended art school in Kansas City and from there went to Hollywood where he sold pictures to Looney Tunes and Merry Melodies. He became an assistant to Friz Freleng and made Porky Pig famous.

In 1870, the last Indian fight in the county is marked between Alton and Osborne City. Settlers sought protection at Walronds Stockade, built in 1870, which stood southeast of Portis. It was the only completed stockade in Osborne County.
