History of the Paxico Inn
Built in the 1880s by the Glotzbach family as a general store and residence for the owners, this building now houses several antique shops, a pottery store, and this inn. The original merchandise of the general store included furniture, feed, food supplies, farm tools, fabric, shoes, notions, and other household items to serve the rural German immigrants. The family's living quarters were upstairs above the general store. Also upstairs were a number of small rooms to accommodate drummers, or the traveling salesmen who sold their wares to the Glotzbach store and the local townspeople. Despite the long narrow staircase, several of these small rooms displayed caskets that were purchased and taken to homes for preparation of the burial service. Since the late 50s, modern times and faster travel have replaced the need for the general store and the building deteriorated until purchased by the Steve Hund Jr. family in 1989. Much of the building has been preserved although restoration of the upstairs continues and will include additional rooms when completed. In the last twenty-five years a number of antiques and specialty stores have occupied Paxico's business district
and restored life and retail commerce to its historic buildings. |
