Delaware, Oklahoma
The town of Delaware was formed around a railroad switch six miles north of Nowata. When the St. Louis and Iron Mountain Southern Railroad came across the state in 1887, it placed switches every six miles. The one north of Nowata was called Comma Switch. Later, the railroad and Indian Department renamed it Delaware.
At first, there were only two houses. There wasn't much growth until the oil boom began in 1905. Then, its population soared to an estimated 4,000.
