Porter, Oklahoma
Porter, Oklahoma was called "Pretty Porter" in the early days. Today Porter is known as the Peach Capital of Oklahoma. At the turn of the century, when people from other states were discovering the fertile soil and open lands in Indian Territory, many flocked to this area on the banks of the Arkansas river and they named it "Pretty Porter."
So long as agriculture was king, Porter thrived. Its soil is ideal for fruit orchards and from the beginning peaches became a major crop.
In the early days Porter had a very active business community and boasted its own newspaper, "The Porter Enterprise."
Its 600 or so inhabitants still proclaim it a great place to live. For one weekend in mid summer outsiders flock to Porter for the Annual Porter Peach Festival and once again its main street is bustling with activity and large crowds of people.
