5 - 25TX0104017e025 - Odessa Downstream: Paintings by Joyce Howell - This exhibition of paintings provides an in-depth look at the abstract interpretations of the natural environment. With the merging of pattern, color, and organic river forms, Howell creates spontaneous and lyrical imagery that seizes the viewers’ attention. The artist lives alongside the Colorado River in the Texas Hill Country, where she observes the natural color changes that occur throughout the day and through the seasons. She closely observes color changes, atmosphere, temperature, and wind, which she interprets in ethereal paintings of lyrical imagery. Her use of riotous color, texture, and movement evokes an emotional response that encourages one to linger in front of her works.

26TX0104017e024 - Odessa Ellen Noël Art Museum - Dia de los Muertos Family Art Day - The Ellen Noël Art Museum is pleased to present its annual Dia de los Muertos Family Art Day on Saturday from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Visitors of all ages will be offered the opportunity to learn about this Mexican holiday through many planned activities, including a variety of unique art projects and other events. 2:30-3:30 p.m.

The Dia de los Muertos Family Art Day is a free event. (Children must be accompanied by an adult.)
From the time of the ancient Aztecs to the modern day, indiginous families have honored their ancestors through the creative arts, in festivitals, and through special preparations of food and flowers. The Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is traditionally celebrated as a time for deceased ancestors to return home and visit loved ones, feast on their favorite foods, and listen to their favorite music. Modern day Dia de los Muertos celebrations are festive and fun-filled remembrances of family and friends.
In the home, family members traditionally honor their deceased ancestors with ofrendas (offerings) which are placed on an altar decorated for the Day of the Dead celebration to honor and please the returning souls. These are decorated with photographs, bread, foods, such as tamales, chicken in mole, and Day of the Dead candies, candles, flowers, toys, and other symbolic presents. These are all things which the families believe the souls enjoyed in their earthly existence.

The Ellen Noël Art Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is always free. More information about the Museum is available at (432) 550-9696, or on the website, www.noelartmuseum
