30 Revisiting the Ohio Frontier -

Take an afternoon and come along for a tour of sites that were very important before Ohio was a state. We will begin at Pickawillany and learn what archaeology has told us about the site. Next stop will be Gen. Arthur St. Clair?s Fort Jefferson. Then it?s on to Greenville and the site of Anthony Wayne?s treaty that began Ohio settlement. The last stop is Fort Recovery, a site associated with both St. Clair and Wayne. 13 Piqua Historical Area - Ohio Historical Society - This site celebrates 2,000 years of Ohio's rich history from prehistoric Indians to the canal era. The focal point of the site is the 1829 restored home and farm of federal Indian agent John Johnston. Costumed tour guides and craft demonstrators provide tours of the farm area. Located behind the 1802 double-penned log barn is a 2,000-year-old prehistoric Indian mound.



Visitors won't want to miss taking a ride on the mule-drawn canal boat on a mile-long restored section of the Miami and Erie canal. Not far from the canal is the modern museum dedicated to Ohio's rich agricultural heritage.

Come to the Johnston Farm before the actual Mother?s Day holiday, learn a craft and take home a homemade gift. While the children are making their secret gift, Moms will learn more about the lives of mothers during the time the Johnston women called this place home. 18 - 19 Rossville Museum and Cultural Center - This 1869 home of former slave York Ryal is a newly renovated monument to freedom. The displays tell the history of the 383 slaves freed by John Randolph of the Roanoke Plantation in Charlotte County Virginia, their journey to the north, and the injustices they suffered. Miami County and American Black History are documented from the 1700's to the 1900's. Exhibits showcase the Mills Brothers, contain African artifacts, and document the under-ground railroad in the area.

4 - 5 Piqua Traders Gathering -

Traders and campers representing the site?s historic time periods will gather. Visitors are invited to stroll among the camps, visit with those who are here, and perhaps make a purchase or two. The 1862 Camp Piqua era will be featured with reenactors and a camp. Visitors are also encouraged to visit the Johnston home, the Historic Indian and Canal Museum, take a ride on the General Harrison canal boat, and bring a picnic lunch and make a day of their visit as they step back into the time periods that have been a part of this area?s rich history.  For more information call 937-587-2796 or 800-752-2757. 10 - 12 Piqua Heritage Festival - A celebration of pioneer life, this festival offers the chance to step back into the 1800s. Visit a Native American village, mountain men rendezvous or French and Indian encampments. See demonstrations of basket weaving, woodcarving, quilting, and soap, pottery and rag-rug making. more than 100 artisans showcase and trade their wares.

17 Rush Creek Gardens - Rush Creek Gardens is a family owned farm specializing in organic farming & community supported agriculture. CSA a unique model of local agriculture involving a direct growing and purchasing relationship between an individual and the local farmer. Customers pay in advance for a share of the farm's seasonal produce, and benefit from maximum freshness and nutrition.

Visitors to Rush Creek will learn how to adapt organic farming methods to benefit their own gardens. Learn to eat the best quality produce during the height of its flavor. Tour the gardens and then, if desired, a fresh treat from the garden can be enjoyed. Purchase a wholesome treat from the fresh "produce stand". Seasonal handcrafted items such as dried gourds are also available.

Rush Creek has 40 acres of pasture, fields, a running creek, annual and perennial gardens plus a reforesation project. Artificial chemicals, synthetic fertilizers and harmful pesticides are never used.

24 - 25 The Maize - Get lost in the MAIZE and have fun! Local farmer Brit Decker joins farmers across the country as he creates an intricate maize pattern right in Miami County. Guests will love to walk through 6 acres of twists and turns that challenge their sense of direction, while providing loads of laughter and adventure.
