Self Guided Auto Tour of the Santa Fe Trail

category : Tours
Self Guided Auto Tour of the Santa Fe Trail An itinerary of 73 markers placed on the five separate routes of the Santa Fe Trail in present day Pawnee, Edwards, and Ford Counties, Kansas by the Wet/Dry Routes Chapter of the Santa Fe Trail Association. Those routs are: the Wet Route, three separate branches of the Dry Route, and the Fort Larned Military Road. The Locations marked were named for topographical sites, Indian engagements, campgrounds, trading ranches, stream crossings, owners on whose property wagon ruts are yet in evidence, sites with reference to where the various routes originated and merged, and campsites used by the 1825 Santa Fe Road Survey Team. Many of the sites can be viewed from the roadside.

The Old West comes alive Memorial Day weekend in Dodge City during the annual Cowboy Heritage Festival at Boot Hill Museum.

Friday evening, enjoy a concert.

Early Saturday morning, the old west will come to life with a western parade ending on the Boot Hill Museum Complex. Chuckwagon breakfasts and hot coffee will be entwined with many stories of the cattle trail. Guests can attend the cowboy poet gathering, watch the living history demonstrations, ride a stage coach and see a gunfight re-enactment.

After a cowboy chuckwagon lunch, visitors can shop with the vendors and listen to the historians and balladeers to see just what started and what ended the famous cattle drives to Kansas.

Saturday evening, dance under the stars at our 1880's Cowboy Ball.

All of the great festivities continue on Sunday with the addition of a non-denominational church service.

When you add it all up, the Cowboy Heritage Festival is a weekend jam packed with cowboys, story telling, poets, musical entertainment, great food and a chance to win a 1880's replica saddle - a $4,000 value.

  • Kansas Pheasant Hunting – Down but not out

HVargas / Foter It’s no secret to those who hunt pheasant and other upland birds that the successive years of drought in the central part of the United States has hurt bird populations. The forecast for Pheasant Hunting in Kansas was not a “flag waver”.  But be advised that Kansas will still probably rank 3rd
