Tamaha Jail & Ferry Landing

The oldest jail in Oklahoma still stands near Kerr Lake at Tamaha. Tamaha was one of the earliest port towns and trading centers in the Choctaw Nation, I.T.. Choctaws were brought from Mississippi up the Arkansas River to Tamaha on steamboats as early as 1831.

Battle of the J.R. Williams

Tamaha is the site of the only civil war naval battle fought in Oklahoma. - Confederate Indian forces, led by Cherokee Brig. Gen. Stand Waitie, were forced aground and captured the union steamboat, J.R. Williams, with cargo valued at $120,000, on June 15th, 1864.
