Levelland, Texas

Levelland was appropriately named for the surrounding terrain, surveyed and plotted by cereal king C.W. Post in 1912 on the Oxsheer Ranch that he had purchased in 1906. The suggested name of Hockley City was denied by the Post Office because of a Harris County town of the same name.

Levelland has recently become known as the "City of Mosaics" with the acquisition of several large outdoor, colorful mosaics. These may be found on the chamber of commerce building, college buildings, the hospital, the clinic, and a freestanding mosaic in Carver Park.

Hockley celebrates the distinction of consistently being among the top ten oil producing counties in the state, and it is one of the largest cotton producing counties as well. Levelland is situated on the migratory path for several species of birds and the Monarch butterfly.

Levelland is home of South Plains College which is noted for its music/arts department teaching country and bluegrass music.

Several parks within city provide recreational activities, including fishing, swimming, picnicking, and a free overnight RV park south on U.S. 385.
