Cuming CountyCuming County surrounds the beautiful Elk Horn Valley offering a variety of outdoor recreational activities from fishing and hunting around the Elk Horn River to hiking across the scenic countryside and observing natural species of wildlife and plant varieties.


The Elk Horn River runs alongside the town of Beemer and provides a scenic backdrop to the Indian Trails Golf Course. In the northeast corner of the county in Bancroft is the historic study of John G. Neihardt, noted poet and author of Black Elk Speaks located on the grounds of the State Historical Society's Neihardt Center. History buffs will find interesting artifacts and information at the Cuming County Historical Museum Complex in West Point, and at the Wisner Heritage Museum in Wisner.

The Sacred Hoop Garden

The Sacred Hoop Prayer Garden is a living symbol of the Hoop of the World from the vision of the Oglala Lakota Holy Man Black Elk, found in John G. Neihardt's, Black Elk Speaks. The Neihardt Center

The Neihardt Center has been constructed for the study and preservation of the works of John G. Neihardt. The memorial room repeats the symbolism of the Hoop of the World and chronicles Neihardt's life, works and the times in which he lived. See the study where Neihardt began his epic poem

The Museum Complex includes a depot museum, one-room school house museum (formerly District #34), the former St. Mathew's Lutheran Church building, Drinklage machinery building, and a caboose.

Dr. Susan LaFlesche Picotte

Dr. Susan LaFlesche Picotte was born in 1865 to the last recognized chief of the Omaha tribe. Her father, Iron Eyes, encouraged his children to learn the ways of the majority white culture. Upon graduation from the Philadelphia Women's Medical College in 1889
