Lake Altus-Lugert, Oklahoma

Altus Reservoir, with 6,260 acre surface acres and 49 miles of shoreline, impounds the North Fork of the Red River which is the boundary between Greer and Kiowa Counties. This boundary was contended to be the border between Oklahoma and Texas and in 1896 the U.S. Supreme Court decreed that Greer County - which today makes up Harmon, Jackson and Greer Counties - belongs to Oklahoma. The lake is surrounded by the stark beauty of rough granite hills and outcroppings--remnants of the Wichita Mountain Range whose peaks once stood over 20,000 feet tall.

Water-skiing, fishing and jet-skiing are popular summer sports. The adjacent Quartz Mountain Resort Park includes a challenging 18-hole golf course with pro-shop, water-slides and paddle-boats, plus hiking trails. It is a favorite spot for rock-climbers, photographers and bird-watchers. The north fork of the Red River runs through the park, and each year in the fall, hundreds of trout are released there for the annual "trout derby" in which participants fish for tagged, prize-winning trout. Campsites, picnic grounds, grocery store, and numerous outdoor activities are within the park.
