Top of the Rockies National Scenic Byway, Colorado


With altitudes seldom dipping below 9,000 feet, this byway is worthy of its name. It crosses 10,424-foot Tennesse Pass en route to the historic mining town of Leadville, the highest incorporated community in the U.S.

  
Directions:From Denver:
Travel west on Interstate 70 to the Copper Mountain exit at the intersection of I-70 and State Highway 91 (Milepost 195). Exit at Copper Mountain and travel south on State Highway 91, the Top of the Rockies Scenic and Historic Byway.

From Grand Junction:
Travel east on Interstate 70 to the Minturn/Leadville exit at the intersection of I-70 and US 24 (Milepost 171). Exit at the Minturn exit and travel south on US 24, the Top of the Rockies Scenic and Historic Byway.

From Colorado Springs:
Travel west on US 24 to Johnson Village. At Johnson Village, turn north and follow US 24 through the town of Buena Vista to the southeast portal of the Byway at the intersection of Highways 24 and 82 (Independence Pass Road). Follow the Byway signs west on State Highway 82 to the village of Twin Lakes, or follow the Byway signs north on US 24 to the city of Leadville.

From Aspen:
Travel east on State Highway 82 to the Village of Twin Lakes and the southwest portal to the Top of the Rockies Scenic and Historic Byway. Note: This route is available in the summer only.
