East Central

East Central Ohio covers the broad rolling country between Columbus and the Pennsylvania line, the unglaciated Appalachian Plateau and Western Reserve country running through Holmes County’s Amish settlements and the steel-belt cities of the Tuscarawas Valley. The terrain rises into the hills of the Allegheny Plateau — hardwood-forest country with deeper hollows than the till plains to the west — and is drained by the Tuscarawas, Mahoning, and Beaver rivers. Nine counties cover the region. Stark holds Canton (the home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the William McKinley Presidential Library and Museum) and Massillon; Wayne holds Wooster (with the College of Wooster); Holmes holds Berlin and Millersburg (the heart of the largest Amish settlement in the world); Tuscarawas holds New Philadelphia and Dover; Jefferson holds Steubenville; Coshocton holds Coshocton and Roscoe Village. Atwood, Clendening, and Tappan lakes anchor the water recreation. Most trips here split among three threads. The Pro Football Hall of Fame and the McKinley Memorial in Canton anchor the cultural itinerary; Holmes County’s Amish country (Berlin, Millersburg, Walnut Creek, Sugarcreek) handles the cultural-tourism side; Roscoe Village’s restored canal-era town fills weekend visits.

Stay a little longer.

Rushing through a place rarely does it justice.
