Southern Vermont

Southern Vermont covers Windham County in the southeastern corner of the state, the rolling country between the Green Mountains and the Connecticut River. The terrain is hardwood-forest country with elevation rising west toward the Green Mountains’ main spine — Mount Snow at Stratton and the surrounding peaks reaching 3,500 to 4,000 feet — and the Connecticut River cutting along the eastern boundary. The West River drains most of the interior. Windham County is the only county in the region. Brattleboro (the largest town) anchors the region; Wilmington holds Mount Snow; West Dover holds the Mount Snow base village; Stratton Mountain holds the Stratton Mountain Resort; Newfane holds the village green often called Vermont’s most photographed; Bellows Falls holds the historic riverfront. The Green Mountain National Forest, the Long Trail, and the Mount Snow and Stratton ski areas concentrate the major outdoor scenery. Most trips here run ski-and-village focused. Mount Snow and Stratton handle the largest ski-traffic streams in southern Vermont; Brattleboro’s redeveloped Main Street and weekly farmers’ market anchor cultural visits; the village greens at Newfane, Grafton, and Townshend run the photographed-village circuit; the Vermont Country Store at Weston (just over the line in Windsor) fills shopping days. Fall foliage runs strongest through October.
