California

California only works when you stop thinking of it as one place. The scale is too big, and the regions are too different. A good trip here is always specific – coast, mountains, desert, or a defined stretch that connects them.

The coastline pulls you into a slower rhythm, with constant stops and short movements between towns, viewpoints, and beaches. The Sierra shifts everything toward elevation and distance, where a single destination can take most of the day to reach and explore. The desert flips it again, opening up space and pushing you toward longer drives and fewer stops.

Because of that variety, planning matters more here than in most states. The payoff is that you can build entirely different experiences depending on where you decide to go.

There isn’t one best season. The state rotates – mountains in summer, deserts in winter, coast year-round if you’re flexible with weather.
