Brood IV, also called the Kansas Brood, of cicadas of the genus, Magicicada, emerge in force every 17 years. I ran across some in Greenwood county, Kansas, while floating Fall River SE of Eureka and NW of Fall River Lake in late May of 1998. I cannot discern the species but the best guess is M. cassini, based on the chorusing and the smallish appearance. My terminology was not quite correct when I shot the video. The discarded "shell" left by a moulted cicada is called an exuvium. File designation is "Brood IV 1998 Fall River.wmv", from an analog Hi8 tape, digitalized with a Sony DRS 460 and edited in Windows Movie Maker. This replaces a slightly earlier version of this video.
