Frequent flooding and resultant high reservoir levels makes fisheries management challenging. Flushing of fish through the dam gates does occur, and fish are numerous in the spillway below the dam. All anglers fishing in the spillway are required to wear personal floatation devices.

, KS CampingThe Hickory Creek Trail is a multi-use trail for the hiker, horseback rider, and mountain biker. The trail length is currently 16 miles but with the placement of two bridges to cross the branches of Hickory Creek it is planned to lengthen the trail to over 30 miles.

, KS OrganizationsTwo popular areas are the Otter Creek Offroad Vehicle Area and the Hickory Creek Trail. The Otter Creek ORV area is located at the west end of the dam and provides 140 acres of trails for dirtbikes and atvs. The area is open from sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset.
