Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument

category : Monuments
Just 30 miles north of Amarillo on Highway 136. For thousands of years, people came to the red bluffs above the Canadian River. They came for flint, vital to their existence. Prehistoric people needed good raw material for tools and weapons and Alibates Flint was some of the finest. Demand for the high quality, rainbow-hued flint is reflected in the distribution of Alibates Flint throughout the Great Plains and beyond. Today this area is protected by the National Park Service and is the only National Monument in Texas. The monument can only be viewed by ranger-led guided tours. Tours are offered by reservation only. Please give park staff ample time to schedule a tour, a few days in advance is best.
