Shoofly Indian Archaeological Site
A self-guided tour through this ancient village site will show you how the native people lived here between AD 1000 and 1250. This site once held more than 80 rooms built of wood, stone and adobe by peoples related to the Hohokam and Salado cultures. The interpretive trail gives visitors an opportunity to learn more about the village. Picnic tables, ramadas and toilet facilities are provided.
The site has been excavated by archaeologists from Arizona State University, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. (Elevation, 5,240 feet.)

Take Highway 87 north from Payson to Houston Mesa Road and turn east. The parking lot is a short distance beyond the Mesa del Caballo subdivision just off the paved road.
