Douglas State Lake The Douglas State Fishing Lake is located two miles northeast of Baldwin just off County Road 1055. The surface area of the lake is 200 acres with approximately 600 acres surrounding the lake.


FISHING - Douglas State Fishing Lake has a variety of fish habitat including brush piles, tire reefs, old bridges, and rock reefs. Fish species include bluegill, white and black crappie, largemouth bass, channel catfish, flathead catfish, carp, and white amur.


Two floating boat docks and fish cleaning stations as well as a handicapped accessible fishing dock are available. A privately owned marina provides bait, snakes, and boat rental to the public.


WILDLIFE - The predominantly woodland area around the lake is open to hunting. Fox squirrel, gray squirrel, white-tailed deer, and rabbit thrive here. Douglas State Fishing Lake also provides good waterfowl hunting. Snow geese and ducks use the lake during migration. The lake is also open to trapping. Muskrat, beaver, raccoon, opossum, skunk, and coyote are found here. Songbirds, ruffed grouse, and woodchucks may also be seen.


CAMPING - Camping is allowed on the area and free to the public. There are no electrical hook-ups or shower facilities. Three pit restrooms are available.

Located at the Old Castle Complex is the Palmyra Post Office and Blood's Grocery which opened in 1857. Originally located north of the highway on the Santa Fe Trail, it served travelers on the trail and the pioneer community of Palmyra, the original townsite later to become Baldwin City.

Allen (Depot) Park

Allen Park, Main and High streets in West Baldwin (formerly Media), is privately owned and maintained by the Santa Fe Trail Historical Society. While privately owned, it is open to the public and offers a ball field, play area and shelterhouse with picnic tables, running water and grills.
