Roan Mountain is most famous for its natural gardens of Catawba rhododendrons. Beyond the gardens are spruce-fir forests and treeless grassy balds. The area is perfect for picnicking, hiking and nature study. The Appalachian Trail travels throught the ridgeline of the mountain.
