Local artists and craftspeople had yearned for a place to show and sell their work. Through the collaborative efforts of the Stokes and Rockingham County Arts Councils, the Art Market opened in May 1988. A grant from the North Carolina Arts Council allowed for the renovation of the old Petree Building in Historic Danbury. This has been home to the Dan River Art Market in Stokes County ever since. Volunteers have put in many hours to make the market the success that it is today. The Dan River Art Market is a favorite stop for the 400,000 annual visitors to beautiful Hanging Rock State Park.
