Fort Mandan is the reconstructed winter home of the Lewis & Clark Expedition in 1804-1805. Located on the banks of the Missouri River, the fort was a place of informational and cultural exchange between the explorers and the Northern Plains Indians. Interpreters on site daily. Visitor services center with gift shop. Picnic shelters, walking trails.

A special area has been created just for kids. At "Fort Mandan Play and Discovery Center," inside the Headwaters Fort Mandan Visitor Center, children will find a truly hands-on experience, trying on period clothes from the expedition era; creating their own scratchings of Jefferson peace medals; and enjoying a life-sized wood carving of Seaman the Newfoundland Dog, created by Martin Boganowski of Washburn. Kiwanis Playground in the Fahlgren Park area just west of Fort Mandan offers children of all ages a unique playtime area with a fort design to the equipment. Handicapped accessible, the playground is located between picnic shelters, surrounding by giant cottonwood trees and served by nearby walking trails
