Much of Aiken`s present-day features are rooted in its history as the "Sporting Capital of the South." Many years ago, the city was also thought of as a healthy resort that brought wealthy northerners down south. Ninety-room "cottages" and winter play houses, many of them on the National Historic Register, make up three historic districts in Aiken.
