Shamrock was established as a post office in 1890 at the dugout home of George Nichels, an Irish sheep rancher. It was Incorporated in 1911 and oil was discovered in 1926, with highly productive natural gas wells in recent decades. Cattle, agriculture, tourism, oil and gas are the primary economic factors. During seasons, hunters take quail, mourning dove, wild turkey and deer.
