4 - 16 Mount Independence State Historic Site - Step back in time to a place where Independence was built on Lake Champlain and discover what life was like for thousands of Revolutionary War soldiers stationed atop Mount Independence. Today an extensive trail system, with a new handicapped accessible trail, offers visitors a true "soft adventure" experience including beautiful scenery and a chance to explore the archaeological remains of this 300-acre site.

Natural Community Ecology and Botany Hike - Marc Lapin, coordinator for the Champlain Valley Clayplain Forest Project, leads a popular hike to discover the natural wonders of Mount Independence. Bring a picnic to enjoy before the walk. Wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather.

29 - 30 Soldiers Atop the Mount - 1776-1777 - Re-enactors demonstrate military tactics, artillery, camp life, colonial crafts, cooking, and clothing. Guided camp tours, trail tours, drilling lessons, and children's activities, games, and history hunt. On Saturday afternoon enjoy a musical performance by VT folksong balladeer Deb Flanders and the annual dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence. Sun. at 3:00 PM Anna Whooley presents "Ann Story: A Vermont Patriot." Call for details.

18 - 20 Company of Select Marksmen, The British & German Withdrawal - This living history unit will commemorate the November 1777 evacuation of Mount Independence by the British Army & their German allies. Watch the bateaux withdrawal on August 12 at 9:00 a.m. then enjoy a guided hike showing the British & German encampment sites, family fun activities, and a lecture, "The Nature of War: Environment and History at Mount Independence" by Kathryn Morse, associate professor of history at Middlebury College who will discuss the interactions of human beings and their environment at Mount Independence, and how evidence of those interactions is visible on the landscape today.
