Fishing Forecast

A comprehensive survey occurring spring through fall of 2009 provided good information on the game fish species within Saylorville. White bass are present in good numbers. White bass were sampled in sizes from 7 to 17 inches. Most were 11 to 14 inches. White bass fishing was slow at Saylorville in 2009 compared to previous years likely due to poor gizzard shad production. Adult gizzard shad are still abundant in Saylorville and the Des Moines River above. With the right conditions shad production should improve. Wipers were sampled up to 28 inches in length. There is a strong year class at 10 to 12 inches from the 2008 stocking. Largemouth bass were sampled in good numbers with fish up to 18 inches. Most of the largemouth sampled were 10 to 14 inches. A good bluegill population is present with some quality fish. Bluegills from 6 to 8 inches were sampled in good numbers. Two year classes of white and black crappies were found. The most abundant year class is 8 to 9 inches. The second year class consists of larger fish ranging from 10 to 12 inches. Walleye from 9 to 20 inches were sampled. Walleye were not sampled in high numbers, but a decent population likely exists due to stockings throughout the Des Moines River above Saylorville. Channel catfish were sampled in good numbers and good size. Sizes ranged from 14 to 29 inches, with the majority of fish sampled in the 20 to 27 inch range. (2009)
