Event Details

Mark the birthday of Ohio Civil War hero and 19th U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes by experiencing life during the Civil War. More than 700 costumed re-enactors camp on the grounds of the Hayes estate for this two-day event. Soldiers conduct military drills, chat with visitors and re-create "Morgan's Raid" (the only Civil War battle fought in Ohio) on the lawn in front of the Hayes Home - complete with cavalry and cannon. Vendors of period wares and food set up canvas tents along Sutlers' Row to ply their trades.

The highlight of the weekend is a formal, military graveside service. President George W. Bush's representatives will be on hand. Veterans, re-enactors, and active-service military personnel also take part in this solemn, moving observance. Special discounted tours of the Hayes Home and Hayes Museum are available to Encampment attendees
