More than 12,000 acres of land surrounding the Broken Bow Lake are open for hunting, with 5,420 acres designated as the Broken Bow Public Hunting Area. The area is predominately forest, providing habitat for deer, wild turkey, and squirrel. The McCurtain County Wilderness Area, a 14,087 acres oak-pine forest adjacent to and just northeast of the lake, was the first land acquired by the State Department of Wildlife Conservation. No hunting is permitted in this area and public access is strictly regulated.
