Lewis and Clark Region

The Lewis and Clark Region covers the northeastern corner of Nebraska, where the Missouri River bends east and forms the border with South Dakota and Iowa. The landscape is layered — fertile river bottoms along the Missouri, glacial bluffs rising sharply from the water, and rolling agricultural country extending inland. The region’s counties — Cedar, Dixon, Dakota, Knox, and Thurston — connect through smaller communities like Niobrara, Crofton, Ponca, and South Sioux City strung along the river road. The Lewis and Clark expedition camped along this stretch in 1804, and several state parks — Niobrara, Ponca, and the Missouri National Recreational River — preserve the river and bluff country largely as the expedition would have found it. Trips here lean toward the unhurried: river drives, state park camping, fishing, eagle watching in winter, and a string of small-town museums tracing the expedition’s progress upriver. The Sandhill country lies just to the west, making the region a natural stop before or after a longer Nebraska loop.
