Illinois
Illinois works best when you separate the state into its different layers. It’s easy to think of it as flat and uniform, but the experience changes depending on where you are.
The northern part of the state is more connected and faster-paced, with easier access to cities and shorter trips. As you move south, the landscape becomes more varied, with hills, rivers, and more space between stops.
Travel here is less about dramatic terrain and more about how easily you can move between places. That accessibility makes it well suited for day trips and shorter outings that don’t require heavy planning.
Spring and fall offer the most comfortable conditions. Summer works, but the heat and humidity can limit how long you stay outside in one stretch.
