Lewis & Clark Pavilion
The Lewis and Clark expedition arrived in what is now Kansas June 26, 1804, in the North Kansas City area and pushed north along the Missouri River, exploring both sides of the river. They camped in Doniphan County, south of White Cloud on July 6-7, and then camped across the river from the town on July 10. They departed on July 11, 1804, and “proceeded on” in their quest to reach the Pacific Ocean.
In White Cloud, a Lewis & Clark pavilion is on the edge of the Missouri River and includes interpretive signage. The region is the headquarters of two Native American tribes – the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska, and the Sac and Fox Nation of Missouri in Kansas. The Four-State Lookout (Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, and on a clear day, Iowa) offers a panoramic view of the Missouri River Valley.
Around White Cloud, you will notice unusual towering river bluffs. These yellow-tinged Loess hills (pronounced like LUSS) are remnants of the glacial movements from the last ice age.
