Waubonsie Trail

category : Historic Trails
The Waubonsie Trail was the first hard road crossing the state of Iowa. It was built in 1911. It began by heading off from the Plank Road in Keokuk and went toward Donnellson. It continued north to Primrose, west to Farmington, then all the way across Iowa to Nebraska City. Waubonsie, for whom the trail was named, was the last chief of the Pottowattamie tribe. The trail passed where he was buried in Fremont County. There once was a restaurant in Donnellson known as the Waubonsie Inn.
