30 Family Fun Fair 2017 - The free family fun fair will take place at the Alfalfa County Fairgrounds Exhibit building from 11am-2pm on Sat, April 1th.

Lunch will be served from 11:30-12:30.

Bring the kids out and experience a free, family filled day!!

12 - 13 Birding & Crystal Festival April 21 & 22 - The Great Salt Plains Birding & Crystal Festival will be April 21 & 22.

Some of the fun activities will include a free movie outside under the stars on Friday at dusk, a town wide garage sale all weekend long, & on Saturday from 9am-1pm go digging for crystals at the Crystal Digging site south of Cherokee along with a new Mobile unit for kids to explore!!

Bird lovers will enjoy a variety of bird watching out at the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge. Prizes will be awarded after the crystal dig!!

4 Fourth of July Celebration - July 4th is a great day of Celebration in Cherokee, Oklahoma! A Fireworks Extravaganza will be held at dark; the day, however, begins much earlier at the City Park, 802 East 2nd.

Horseshoes, Cotton Candy, parade, face painting, train ride, pet contests, games, watermelon, annual Hamburger Fry, live entertainment, turtle races, homemade ice cream, drawings for lots and lots of prizes donated by area merchants.

Everyone is encouraged to make it a family day full of Old Fashioned Fun on the Fourth as well as a Celebration of a Bountiful Harvest.

16 - 17 Great Salt Plains Stampede Rodeo - The Great Salt Plains Stampede Rodeo in Cherokee offers entertainment for all ages. In addition to traditional rodeo events like bareback riding, saddle bronc, the roping events, barrel racing and bull riding.

Visitors will also be treated to wild cow saddling and 4-wheeler barrel racing.

Don't miss the cash prize and scramble where children ten and under race to gather up as many fun prizes and as much cash as possible.

This event also includes a queen, princess and junior princess competition that allows young ladies to show off their horsemanship skills as well as beauty. Mark your calendar .

25 - 31 Pelican Viewing - Pelican Viewing --- thousands of pelicans typically migrate to the Great Salt Plains area in Mid-Sept. The number of birds are dependent upon when the pelicans choose to migrate into the area. Typically mid September.

White pelicans start arriving at Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge in early September as they migrate south from their nesting grounds in Canada, the Dakotas, Colorado, Wyoming and Minnesota. They stop at Salt Plains to feed and rest before continuing their annual trek south to the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast where they will spend the winter. The white pelican population will peak at Salt Plains NWR at 20,000 to 50,000 birds. White pelicans are four to five feet tall and have a wingspan of eight feet. They will feed primarily on small fish such as carp and shad in the shallow Salt Plains Lake. The white birds have black wing tips and gather fish with their pouched bills.

The Refuge has a large variety of shorebirds, waterfowl, and songbirds. Over 300 different species have been identified in the area. There is also a variety of other wildlife which can be seen including deer and turkey. Visitors are encouraged to stop by the Refuge office for information or directions. A hiking trail and an auto tour route are also located near the Refuge office. Shorebirds may also be seen at the Shorebird Trail located along Highway 11.

There are no fees or permits required. Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge is one of over 500 National Wildlife Refuges located throughout the nation, which are operated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The area is well known for its tremendous waterfowl and shorebird populations. It has been recognized by the American Bird Conservancy as a globally important bird area and is also designated as a Western Hemisphere Shorebird Preserve. It is also a stopover point for whooping cranes migrating south to Aransas National Wildlife Refuge on the Texas coast.

28 October Stroll - The theme of the October Stroll was inspired by the practice of planting turnips along with wheat each fall. A carry over from our pioneer days, when Turnips were an important source of winter food, this practice today results in the town being inundated in turnips each fall. So, join us as we decorate them, turn them into little cars and race them, pitch them, and fire them using a giant turnip gun. Of course, we will have chances to taste them as well, with a recipe contest. Children aged 4 and up can compete in a pedal tractor pull. Music, crafts, and food complete the fun.

7 Santa Store & Christmas Parade - Make plans to fill your day with lots of great shopping, family fun, and surprises galore.

1-3 P.M. - Santa's Gift Shop opens at the Baker Building with gifts galore for children to buy! For only a Quarter (25 cents), little ones can pick out a special gift for someone they love.

Santa will also have sacks of candy and a listening ear for the Kids and their Christmas Wishes at the Baker Building!

Than head on down to the United Supermarket parking lot for a Grand Drawing of prizes donated by merchants all over town!! There will be lots of gift baskets & christmas goodies for everyone to win!!

LIGHTED CHRISTMAS PARADE

Join our little City on the Plains as we have a Lighted Nighttime Parade beginning at dusk. The route will be from North Grand to South Grand. A lighted train and festive floats will proceed down Grand!!
