The Union army under the command of Gen. William T. Sherman crossed the Savannah River in early February 1865. His army was to cut a 30-mile swath of destruction through the heart of this region that locals still talk about today. Visit the Region 3 Discovery Center in Blackville and view exhibits on this early phase of Sherman's Campaign through the Carolinas which include the Battle of Rivers Bridge, Battle of Broxton's Bridge and the Battle of Aiken.

The Discovery Center features a train inspired museum which shares the rich history of Aiken, Bamberg, Barnwell and Orangeburg counties. Interactive displays depict the beautiful countryside and the region's history. The museum also includes a gift shop featuring local artwork and South Carolina-themed gifts, a coffee shop and reading room. Educational programs are available.
