Event Details

National Trails Day. Join museum volunteer Betty Collins who will lead an engaging, history-infused walk on Hill-Stead’s manicured grounds and farther afield. Light-moderate difficulty. This is a two-part hike. Visitors may opt for only the first part of the walk if they prefer a lighter hike. 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

1:00 to 1:45 pm: Take an easy walk around the magnificent grounds of Hill-Stead to explore the Beatrix Farrand-designed sunken garden, stone walls and the American Elm. Stroll along the lawns and allees as you learn fascinating historic tidbits about the estate and enjoy the scenic overlooks of the Farmington Valley.

1:45 to 3:00 pm: The walk continues onto the scenic trails for a more adventurous, moderate level, hike up to 1.5 miles to the outer grounds of Hill-Stead. Trasverse meadows, woodlands and wetlands and explore the historic grounds of the former dairy farm, with its current flock of sheep, and hike the historic trails including portions of the Metacomet Trail–part of the New England Trail-National Scenic Trail.
