We'll bring all your dreams alive…with "Xanadu!" This multi-Tony nominated musical based on the 1980s Universal film starring Olivia Newton-John features Top Billboard hits by Electric Light Orchestra! This hilarious, glittering pop-rock, 80s-Retro, roller-disco, muse-tastic musical rolls into Arts Express Theatre June 20-July 13. Shows run Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday Matinees at 2 p.m., with no show on July 4 (Independence Day).
It's Venice Beach, California, 1980, and aspiring artist Sonny Malone (Noah Embry) is on the verge of giving up on his dreams, when Greek muse Clio, disguised as Australia Kira (Abbi Rye), suddenly appears to help him fulfill his destiny and open a roller disco. Kira asks her sister muses to assist in her quest to help Sonny, but her jealous sisters Melpomene (Alicia Green) and Calliope (Caroline Murphy) hatch a plot to curse Kira instead.
All Kira and Sonny need is a venue and a little "Magic," but when they approach real estate mogul Danny (Ben Anderson), he's skeptical of the prospect. But when Danny finally agrees, the evil sisters' curse comes into play and threatens all Kira and Sonny hold dear. Will Kira and Sonny find a way to dodge the curse, find true love, achieve their roller disco dreams, and reach the ultimate gift of Xanadu?
With a brilliant collection of jukebox hits by ELO’s Jeff Lynne as well as John Farrar, Olivia Newton-John and the Tubes, a witty and comical book by Douglas Carter Bean, you'll want to bust out your roller skates and tube socks and rock out with AET's "Xanadu" this summer!
"Xanadu" is Directed and Choreographed by Mickey Nugent, with Music Direction by Elizabeth Spencer.
