The Annual Juneteenth Ohio Festival is the longest-running, fastest growing event in the Central Ohio African American community. This year we have teamed with Ohio Commission on Minority Health to offer free health screenings. In addition, we will host a College/Career and Job Fair.
Do not forget about our "Talent Show!" Our talent show is one of the longest running talent shows in the state of Ohio and this year we have partnered with "The Greater Art Council" to present the winner with $3,000. Our feature artist will be David Ruffin Jr. (son of the late Temptations lead singer Mr. David Ruffin). David Ruffin Jr. will be in concert Saturday, June 18th at 6pm singing his fathers old Temptations hits along new music. National recording artist K'Jon will also be performing on Sunday, June 19th 4pm.
Juneteenth commemorates President Lincoln's signing of the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, an act that began to free African Americans and Black indigenous natives of the northern continent. The last state in the union to receive news of this historic event was Galveston Texas on June 19, 1865. Almost two and a half years later, General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston Texas and read order number three freeing the remaining blacks of the union. This is the date recognized by 35 million African Americans throughout the nation as their Independence Day.
