Nine-year-old Laura Ingalls moved here with her family in 1876 so her father could manage the Burr Oak Masters Hotel. This is the only childhood home of Laura Ingalls Wilder that remains on its original site. The hotel is restored to its 1876 appearance and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, along with the 1910 bank building that houses a visitor center.
