McAlester, Oklahoma

The McAlester Building Foundation, in the old McAlester High School building, contains the Coal Miners Museum and several rooms of memorabilia. Featured are a series of historical exhibits organized in chronological order with hands-on displays including a collection of Native American artifacts, an exhibit detailing military history from the Civil War to present, and a high school memorabilia/graduate hall of fame section.

Open events are held each year including the Coal Miners Reunion, The Indian Festival, Heritage Day and the Ole Fashioned Christmas.

The Oklahoma Prison Historical Museum is the state's only museum detailing the history of Oklahoma's prison system. Exhibits include an actual ball and chain, "Ol Sparky," Oklahoma's electric chair, items owned by prisoners, and numerous historical photos.
