POW/MIA Candlelight Ceremony

USS ALABAMA Battleship Memorial Park will host a POW/MIA Candlelight Ceremony on Friday evening, September 16, in honor of National POW/MIA Recognition Day. The ceremony will be held at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the grounds of the park at 6:30 p.m. and will be conducted by the South Alabama Veterans Council.

"Americans won't let our military missing in action and prisoners of war slip from the collective national memory. Their sacrifice, and that of their families, has been too great," stated executive director MG Janet L. Cobb, USA (retired).

The evening will include a POW/MIA Table Ceremony, and lighting of individual candles. The ceremony will honor those service men and women who were held captive and returned and those service men and women who still remain missing in action. Information on the POW/MIAs from the State of Alabama will be given to all attendees, along with information on National POW/MIA Recognition Day.

"Our Alabama POW/MIAs are important to us and we all need to recognize them and their contribution to our freedom," explained Lou Lartigue, president of the South Alabama Veterans Council. "We intend to recognize them on September 16. We invite everyone to join us for this event."

The POW/MIA Candlelight Ceremony is free of charge and the public is invited to attend. USS ALABAMA Battleship Memorial Park is located at 2703 Battleship Parkway. For more information please call 433-2703 or visit the South Alabama Veterans Council website at http://www.savc.info
