Sedan, Kansas, was a thriving county seat at the time Albert Casement became a prosperous rancher and businessman. In 1911 he used locally quarried limestone and native lumber to construct two large barns on his farm. The larger of the barns is a two-story, 54 x 74 foot, bank barn complete with a 3,300 square foot haymow. Stalls for light work horses, tack and feed storage are located on the first level. The small barn, an open sided 40 x 50 foot double crib structure, was used for the cattle operation. A smaller barn was built around the original homestead cabin, used by Albert’s father John C. Casement and this log cabin is in good shape today.
In 1999, Don Armstrong, a retired builder, and his wife Rachael contracted to buy the old Casement farm. The larger barn was in deplorable condition. The original roof was deteriorating, the loft had rotting rafters and large sections of the barn’s walls and floor were disintegrating. The entire structure was listing at a dangerous angle due to the hillside encroaching on the lower level and buckling the two-foot limestone walls. A three year restoration effort was successful in restoring the wonderful old barn and the adjacent “Cow Barn.” The Three Barns complex is now used for trail rides, reunions, business retreats and special events.
