4 - 5 Hummingbirds of New Mexico Festival - Scheduled to attend are Black-chinned, Broad-tailed, Calliope, Blue-throated, Magnificent and Rufous hummingbirds, along with invited friends (Broad-billed, Costa's and Allen's) and neighbors - and a number of humans, who like to watch. There are 17 species of hummingbird in New Mexico.

Activities will include hummingbird banding each morning 7 a.m.-10 a.m., slide presentations and educational programs, and guided bird walks. Bring your binoculars, lawn chairs and a picnic lunch and spend the day.

"Our recreational pursuits are as diverse as our citizens," said Mike Cerletti, secretary of the New Mexico Tourism Department. "The Hummingbirds of New Mexico Festival gives us the opportunity to share in one of those common pursuits in an incredibly beautiful area. It sounds like a whole lot of fun."

Also known to visit Lake Roberts are the Black Hawk, Bridled Titmouse, Painted Redstart, Purple Martin, Pinon and Steller's Jay, Osprey and various warblers and ducks, along with Lesser green-backed Goldfinch, Lesser Night Hawk, Mourning Dove, White-breasted Nuthatch, Acorn Woodpecker, Western Bluebird, Kestrel, Violet Green Swallow, Chipping Sparrow, Scarlet Tanager, Hepatic Tanager, Zone-tailed Hawk, Scrub Jay, Canyon Wren, Northern Flicker, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Brewers Sparrow, Lark Sparrow, Western Kingbird and the Bewicks Wren.
