Wahkeena, named with an Indian word meaning most beautiful, is located on the edge of the Hocking Hills. This 150-acre outdoor education area is used for nature study and as a nature preserve. Some of the activities you can enjoy at this park are visiting the Nature Center, viewing aquatic creatures from the boardwalk over the wetlands and Lake Odonata, walking, and photography. It provides exceptional opportunities for birding and observation of wildlife. Guided nature walks and other programs are offered throughout the season.

Wahkeena's sandstone cliffs, part of the famous Black Hand sandstone, are forested with tulip and oak trees. Rhododendron and mountain laurel are common, along with many ferns and orchids. Bird feeders attract many of the 69 species seen here. The rustic lodge now contains an interpretive center. Three trails are available for visitors to view the site.

Wahkeena Nature Preserve is one of 58 sites owned by the Ohio History Connection, a private, non-profit organization. Wahkeena is managed by the Fairfield County Parks and supported by the Ohio Association of Garden Clubs.
